DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from Francis Joseph SLOANE, La Casa di Monte Catini, near Volterra, 22 Dec 1852. Re: Pleased by Murchison's interest in the discovery of a Mastodon by Sloane's protege the 'Surgeon of ?Montapuli' which has been purchased by the Grand Duke for the Natural History Museum (La Specula) of Florence, the discovery caused excitement amongst the locals who wished to see the 'Mostro Antediluviano'; is considering installing a steam engine in one of his mines and is keen that it should be made by an English company.
