| Administrative History | Henry Grey Bennet was born on 2 December 1777 to Charles Bennet, fourth Earl of Tankerville and his wife Emma. He was educated at Eton College, served five years in the 1st foot guards and entered Lincoln’s Inn in 1798, and Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1799 before graduating MA in 1801. He was called to the bar in 1803 and practised on the western circuit. He was Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury 1806-1807 and 1811-1826 and was very politically active. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1812. He became a Fellow of the Geological Society in 1811 and was President 1813-1815.
He gave up his seat in parliament in 1826 after the threat of criminal prosecution for importuning a young male servant at Spa in August 1825. He remained in exile with his wife near Lake Como, Italy, until his death in Florence on 29 May 1836.
