Administrative HistoryThe cartoon, poked fun at the outlandish concept put forward by De la Beche's scientific contemporaries, such as Charles Lyell, that geological and biological history was cyclical and therefore extinct animals could return to the Earth.

As well as being a geologist and Fellow of the Geological Society, De la Beche was a gifted artist, often illustrating his own scientific papers or creating doodles and caricatures for his and others’ amusement.

The image was reproduced as a frontispiece to an edition of Francis Buckland's book, 'Curiosities of natural history'.
