DescriptionLetter from Henry Thomas DE LA BECHE, to George Bellas Greenough, [?1835-1839]. Re: Unable to direct the colouring of the map [presumably Greenough's 'Geological map of England & Wales, 2nd edition] around the Chudleigh, Devon area as it is not clear which age of fossils the limestones contain [Silurian or Carboniferous] and explains his theory that the conflicting strata may have been 'islandised'; recommends Greenough consult the survey maps of the area and give his opinion.
Administrative HistoryThe letter seems to relate to the 'Devonian controversy' which led to delineation of the Devonian system in 1839/1840.
