DescriptionLetter from B NEWTON, Ripon, to George Bellas Greenough, 12 Apr [1819]. Re: Will send Java specimens collected by Dr Horsfall [Thomas Horsfield], presently; describes the geology of West Riding and other areas in Yorkshire.
Administrative HistoryThe letter makes brief reference to the ill health of Horsfield [who returned to Britain in 1819] and the death of another savant [botanist Joseph Arnold who died of malaria in the late spring of 1818] both of whom accompanied Thomas Stamford Raffles' to Bencoolen, Java.

The description of the geology of Yorkshire is likely to be connected to the research for Greenough's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1820).
