Description
Letter from John ROBISON, Edinburgh [on Royal Society of Edinburgh headed paper], to George Bellas Greenough, 12 Feb 1839. Re: Highland Society has accumulated a collection of geological sections but have found the colouring used quite arbitrary and would like advice on a consistent scale and colour uniformity; has found an artist with connections to the colour makers in London, the plan being to have made up specific cakes of foundation colours which will relate to specific strata.

The Ordnance Survey maps were originally hand coloured from watercolour blocks specifically manufactured as specified below.
