DescriptionManuscript volume, 'Papers connected with the Geological Society', an account of the history of the first three years of the Society by George Bellas GREENOUGH, probably compiled between [1848-1849], notably concerning the unsuccessful proposal that the Geological Society become an 'Assistant Society' to the Royal Society. In between the historical account are lists of members in order of seniority between 1807-1810, draft lists (some incomplete) of Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Officers, Council Members, salaried officers until 1849, and transcripts of salient letters sent or received including:

Humphry DAVY, 1807 (p 5); James LAIRD, 3 July 1834 (p 6); Leonard HORNER, secretary to the Committee of Nomenclature, 13 May 1808 (p 31); Edward John BURROW, May 1808 (p 37); James LAIRD, 1808 (p 41); Charles Francis GREVILLE, 1809 (p 45); Leonard HORNER, 1809 (p 57); COUNT DE BOURNON, 1809 (p 57); James LAIRD, 25 January 1809 (p 57); Leonard HORNER, 1809 (p 59); James LAIRD, 13 February 1809 (p 65); Charles Francis GREVILLE, 1809 (p 67); James LAIRD, 1809 (p 73); James LAIRD, 3 March 1809 (p 77); Joseph BANKS and George Bellas Greenough, 3 March 1809 (p 81-87); James LAIRD, 6 March 1809 (p 87); James HALL, 8 March 1809 (p 89); Charles HATCHETT, 9 March 1809 (p 91); Humphry DAVY, 9 March 1809 (p 93); Robert FERGUSON to James Laird, 15 March 1809 (p 97); Joseph BANKS and George Bellas Greenough, 8 February 1810 (p 101).

Also loose sheets of manuscript notes, which seem to concern sketching out a plan for the history of the Society, [1840s].
ProvenanceThe loose sheets were removed during the recataloguing of the Greenough collection from LDGSL/947/2/4/3 [previously LDGSL/959] as they did not relate to the other items in that folder.
