Description | Manuscript volume entitled 'Mapping' containing extensive ink and pencil notes on the history, design, colouring, ornament and production of maps, collated by George Bellas Greenough, [1845-1854]. The contents concern the different kinds of map available and their publishers, and what constitutes a good map, but also the different projections, papers, printing and colouring processes which should be considered, including three dimensional models. Published sources are frequently cited including Greenough's own Presidential Addresses from the Royal Geographical Society and transcripts of letters. Towards the back of the volume are instructions for various processes including cerography, lithography, electrotyping, transfer paper, 'rendering paper transparent for colouring', making size, and anastatic printing. The volume is partially indexed, and was clearly a work in progress. Contains some loose sheets and scraps of notes. |
