Description | Financial papers relating to the production of George Bellas GREENOUGH's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1820): comprising:
1) Receipts, one cheque and brief details of payments made by the Map Commiitee or George Bellas Greenough to Thomas Webster for the drawing and later colouring of the map, January 1815-August 1820.
2) Signed agreements with Samuel John Neele to provide the engraving and paper for the production of the map, December 1814-July 1817; small notebook detailing a running cost of the engraving, proof printing and subsequent modifications made to the production of the basemap, June 1815-April 1819; abstracts of bills with receipts for services, September 1815-March 1820.
3) William Ebden's estimate of cost for colouring the map, 31 August 1819; breakdown of the number of maps coloured and when and to whom they were delivered, December 1819-May 1820; receipts of payments made by Henry Warburton to Ebden, March-December 1820.
4) Details of payment to Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Bronn, with receipt, for the printing of 750 copies of the memoir to accompany the map, 18 December 1818. Also statement of account of printing, distribution and advertising of the memoir and map by Longman, Hurst, etc, between January 1820-June 1821. |
Administrative History | Thomas Webster (1772-1844), Keeper of the Museum and the Society's draughtsman drew the basemap of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales' (1820), and later hand coloured the first batches. The cartographer Samuel John Neele was the engraver. William Ebden also coloured batches of the map, initially estimating 10s per map, but actually charging 15s. |
