Description | Proof, without mountain topography, of George Bellas GREENOUGH's 'Geological Map of England and Wales', [?1817]. Pencil [much of which has been erased] and corrections in red by Greenough, including a rough draft of the title sheet. The red annotations have been crossed out, presumably by Neele as he worked through the corrections. Six sheets, sectioned and on linen in box. |
Administrative History | Thomas Webster drafted the outline map consisting of coast and rivers with name of principal places and districts which was ready to be engraved by the end of 1814. Samuel J Neele agreed to engrave the map, starting in June 1815 with the details gradually being added during the four year engraving process until April 1819.
This proof is clearly after LDGSL/947/5/1/4 as much detail has been added. According to Neele's record of his engraving activities [see: LDGSL/947/5/1/1], from June -September 1817, considerably more information was inserted, including coal mines - as can be seen on these sheets. The agreement dated July 1817 agreed that hills and marshes would be added within one year. |
CustodialHistory | Historically a broad date of 1818 was given to all of the draft maps in this series as it was thought that the 'mountain' topography was not added until 1819. |
