Date Note | Date of one of the notes on the SW sheet |
Description | Proof copy of George Bellas GREENOUGH's 'Geological Map of England and Wales', with pencil markings of title location; annotations in red and black ink, with notes to Samuel J Neele requesting corrections and additions by Greenough, [c.May 1818]. Some rough colouring and key to chemical symbols on the SW sheet. Much of the annotations have been crossed out, presumably by Neele as he worked through the corrections. Split into four sheets, sectioned on linen in box. |
Administrative History | Thomas Webster drafted the outline map consisting of coast and rivers with name of principal places and districts which was ready to be engraved by the end of 1814. Samuel J Neele agreed to engrave the map, starting in June 1815 with the details gradually being added during the four year engraving process until April 1819.
The base map of this proof and the previous one (LDGSL/947/5/1/6) appear to be in the same state. Both have more detail than LDGSL/947/5/1/5 and therefore must be later.
In the National Museum of Wales collection, there is a draft of the Greenough map with a provisional publication date of 1st January 1819 on the title, and the topography is engraved - all missing from this map. According to Neele's record of his engraving activities (LDGSL/947/5/1/1), two sets of proofs 'not connected with mountains' for final corrections were printed on 19 April 1818, one of which may be this map. |
