Date Note | Base map, date of other maps in this series. |
Description | Geological colouring, probably by George Bellas Greenough and Daniel Sharpe, with some annotations by Greenough, [1851-1852], on a draft version of John MacCulloch's 'A Geological Map of Scotland', published by Samuel Arrowsmith, 1832. On the reverse of three of the sheets are typical Greenough lists of fjords, firths and lochs. Greenough no.405. Scale-1:250,000, each sheet measurs c.95 x 77cm [c.200cm x 150cm overall]. Dissected on cloth. |
Administrative History | Although the latest reference cited on the map is from 1844, the similarity to the others in this series means that it is likely to have formed part of the research for the Greenough & Sharpe map of Scotland of 1852, see LDGSL/702. The colouring seems to be neater than that of the previous in this series, but closer to the map which follows.
The title of MacCulloch's base map has not been engraved, instead a flimsy proof is attached. The broken lines indicating the edges of each outcrop are present on this map. Thomas Sheppard's list mistakenly records this map as a copy of MacCulloch's final work. |
