Description | Geological colouring on a map of Scotland by George Bellas GREENOUGH and probably Daniel SHARPE, [?1852]. Base map is 'A map of Scotland divided into counties shewing the principal roads, railways, rivers, canals, lochs, mountains, islands, etc', drawing by F A Carrington and G W Carrington, engraved by I Dower, etched by T Harwood and published by Samuel Lewis and Co, [1846]. Neat geological colouring throughout, with key and pencil notes in Greenough's hand. Scale-1:315,000 [Scale: 5 miles to an inch], 210cm x 132cm. Greenough no.395. Dissected on cloth. |
Administrative History | Aware that there was a dearth of good geological maps of Scotland in the Society's collection, the Council purchased a copy of Lewis' map of Scotland c.1851/1852 and requested that George Bellas Greenough and Daniel Sharpe colour it geologically.
This map appears to be a fair copy draft and uses a slightly different colour scheme to the final map LDGSL/702 (ie gneiss is pink on this map, but yellow on the final version).
In Thomas Sheppard's list, the item is recorded as being by Sharpe only. |
