DescriptionGeological colouring, with notes around the margin and on the map, by George Bellas Greenough, [after 1817], on base map 'The Country 25 Miles round London, planned from a scale of one mile to one inch', published by William Faden, 1802. The base map has limited topography, so darker lines of watercolour have been added to delineate the hills. Greenough no.179. Scale-1:63,660. Dissected on cloth, sheet size c.56 x 65.5cm & 67 x 55.6cm.
Administrative HistoryIn Henry Warburton's paper "On the Bagshot Sand", 'Transactions of the Geological Society of London', S2, vol 1 (1822), pp48-52, he states "In tracing this outline I have not entered into any very minute topographical details, because the surface over which the sand extends has been laid down from the observations which I made upon it, in company with Mr. Buckland and Mr. Greenough, in Mr. G.'s Geological Map of England."

The map contains no bibliographic citations and its geological descriptions appear quite basic. There is one reference to information from William Buckland in the description of the strata of St Anne's Hill, near Thorpe, likely to be connected to a donation to the Museum from Buckland in December 1817 [see GSL/MUS/5/1/2].

The map, therefore, may be connected to the first edition of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1820).
