Description | Geological colouring, with a small number of pencil notes and a key by George Bellas Greenough, February 1819, on base 'A New Map of Wiltshire Divided into Hundreds', published by John Cary, 1818. Greenough no.297. Scale-1:200,000. Dissected on cloth, 57 x 62.5cm. |
Administrative History | Greenough's notes cite William Smith's work twice, notably "Smiths Map more correct than Bucklands for this part of the Country (1815)". It is unclear whether Greenough also used Smith's County Map of Wiltshire as a source which was issued in January 1819 (and is also on a modified version of Cary's basemap). Amongst the notes is a brief reference to "teeth and bones of crocodile" found by Etheldred Benett.
The annotation 'corrected by GBG to Feb 1819', indicates that the map is likely to have been used as part of his research for Greenough's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1820). |
