Description | Geological colouring and key, with copious notes in pencil and ink, including list of Dawlish shells, by George Bellas Greenough, [1813-1820] on base 'A Topographical Map of Devonshire, including parts of the Adjacent Counties Reduced from a Survey made by Order of the Board of Ordnance under the direction of Col. Mudge', etched by J Palmer and published by John Cary, London, 4 June 1813. Greenough no.207. Scale-1:120,000. Dissected on cloth, each sheet 98 x 63cm. |
Administrative History | The early geological terminology and the notes of two dated sources - William Buckland (13 February 1814) and ?Leonard Horner (1815) respectively, indicate that the map was likely to have been used as part of the research for the first edition of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1820).
Greenough notes that the taxonomy of Dawlish shells is after 'Montagu' which is likely to be Colonel George Montagu (1753-1815). |
