Description | Geological colouring [on the NE and NW only] with key and small number of notes by George Bellas Greenough, [1811-?1840], on base 'A New Map of the County of Derby divided into hundreds' (2nd ed), published by Charles Smith, 1808. No Greenough number. Scale-1:180,000, 71 x 50cm |
Administrative History | The delineation of the faults and 'derangement' of the strata is clearly based on the work of John Farey, either from his "An account of the great Derbyshire Denudation", Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol 101 (1811) or 'General view of the agriculture and minerals of Derbyshire; with observations on the means of their improvement...', London, (1811-1813). The colouring, however, does not follow Farey's outlines.
The map is likely to have been used as part of the research for Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales', but it is unclear which edition. |
