Description | Geological colouring, with notes and key, by George Bellas Greenough, [?1813-1830s], on base 'A New Map of Shropshire divided into hundreds', published by John Cary, 1811. Greenough no.275. Scale-1:100,000. Dissected on cloth in case, 49.5 x 57cm. |
Administrative History | The map references information taken from Arthur Aikin's paper "Observations on the Wrekin, and on the great Coal-field of Shropshire", 'Transactions of the Geological Society of London', S1, vol 1 (1811). Although not referenced, a number of the geological notes derive from James Yates' paper, "Observations on the Structure of the Border Country of Salop and North Wales; and of some detached Groups of Transition Rocks in the Midland Counties", 'Transactions of the Geological Society of London', S2, vol 2 (1827). A note also makes reference to a geological section of the coalfield across the Clee Hills by Roderick Murchison which is presumably connected to his work in Shropshire in the early 1830s.
Some of the notes look to be older than others, whilst the colouring also appears to be reworked on the lower right of the map. From the later dated references, the map was probably used as part of the research for the second edition of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1840), but it may also have been used for the earlier edition (1820). |
