DescriptionGeological colouring with notes but no key, by George Bellas Greenough, [after 1827] on base 'A New Map of the County of Hereford divided into hundreds' (2nd ed), published by Charles Smith, 1808. Down the left margin are lists of country seats and their owners, and also churches and castles. Greenough no.235. Scale-1:150,000. Dissected on cloth, 63 x 58.5cm.
Administrative HistoryAlthough there are no evident bibliographic references on the map, on the top right is a note indicating that the fossil Pentamerus Knightii is found in Weaver's Quarry near Downton. This is referenced in James Yates' paper, "Observations on the Structure of the Border Country of Salop and North Wales; and of some detached Groups of Transition Rocks in the Midland Counties", 'Transactions of the Geological Society of London', S2, vol 2 (1827), on page 247.

The map may have been used as part of the research for the second edition of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England and Wales' (1840).
