Description | Geological colouring and extensive notes by George Bellas Greenough, [1814-1839], with written key in pencil at the top of the map. The base map is 'North Wales', published by J & E Furnival, Llanymynech, 1 June 1814. Greenough no.360. Scale-1:250,000. Dissected on cloth. |
Administrative History | Thomas Sheppard's list gives date of c.1834, possibly because the notes on the map make no reference to the work of Roderick Murchison and Adam Sedgwick of the mid-1830s. There are two bibliographic references on the map, both from 1827, notably James Yates' "Observations on the Structure of the Border Country of Salop and North Wales; and of some detached Groups of Transition Rocks in the Midland Counties", 'Transactions of the Geological Society of London', S2, vol 2 (1827), pp237-264. However some of the geological notes and lithography marked on the map appear to relate to the first edition of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales' (1820). The map, therefore, was probably reworked for the second edition of George Bellas Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales' (1840). |
