Date Note | Given same span date as the other map of Monmouth which it closely resembles. |
Description | Geological colouring and notes by George Bellas Greenough, [1824-1839] on base map 'A New Map of the County of Monmouth Divided into Hundreds', published by Charles Smith, London, 3rd edition, 1818. Greenough's annotations are principally geological, but he also lists castles and notes the owners and architects of grand houses. Greenough no.257. Scale-1:120,000. Dissected on cloth, 58.5 x 63cm. |
Administrative History | A note on the map makes reference to the work of William Conybeare, likely to be from: W Buckland & W D Conybeare, "Observations on the South-western Coal District of England". 'Transactions of the Geological Society of London', series 2, vol 1 (1824), pp210-316. Some of the colouring and formations delineated on this map, seem to have been copied from the Buckland's & Conybeare's published map.
Probably used as part of the research/drafting of the second edition of George Bellas Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales', (1840). |
