Date Note | Date of initials in corner of each sheet, death of Greenough |
Description | Incomplete geological colouring (on SW and part of SE sheets only), possibly by George Bellas Greenough, with a small number of pencil notes, [1847-1855], on uncoloured base map 'A General Map of Ireland to Accompany the Report of the Railway Commissioners shewing the physical features and geological structure of the country. Constructed in 1836 and engraved in 1837', [Richard Griffith and T A Larcom], published by Hodges & Smith, Dublin and James Gardner, London, [1839]. The corner of each sheet is dated and initialled with a production (print) date of between 10-15 February 1847. Greenough no.524. Sectioned on linen, each sheet measures 63 x 81cm. Scale-1:250,000. |
Administrative History | According to Gordon Herries Davies' 'Sheets of many colours: the mapping of Ireland's rocks 1750-1890' (1983), the base map of Griffith's map continued to be issued until at least 1852. Most were uncoloured, but the outcrops on the engraved sheet are delineated with broken lines. Despite differences in hue, the colouring of this map seems to be relatively faithful to Griffith's original. |
