Description | Incomplete geological colouring and annotations, by George Bellas Greenough, delineating the extent and contour of the chalk formation across south east England and Europe, with pale geological markings of other rock types such as Oolite, Mountain Limestone and Quartz, [1816-1820s], on base map 'Europe, exhibiting its Principal States etc', published by William Faden, 1791. Scale-1:8,000,000. |
Administrative History | Thomas Sheppard's list gives date of c.1830 but it is unclear where this came from. However the terminology, when compared to maps in this series, may indicate an earlier (pre-Murchison/Sedgwick) date.
Greenough did participate on a five month trip to Europe in 1816 alongside William Buckland and W D Conybeare and was certainly working on a map of Europe by 1817. The simplicity of the geology which is marked, ie the chalk formation in the south-east of England and France was also a topic covered by Thomas Webster and Buckland around this time. |
