Description | Geological colouring with key and a number of notes by George Bellas Greenough, [c.1834-1847] on base map 'Karta ofver Sverige och Norrige' [Map of Sweden and Norway], published by C P Hallstrom for the Geografiska Inrattningen, 1815. Greenough no.1139 Scale-1:1,900,000. 64 x 101cm. Dissected on cloth in covers. |
Administrative History | References on the map include: colouring authority based on Moritz von Englehardt's 'Geognostischer Umriss von Finnland [Darstellungen aus dem Felsgebäude Russlands] (1820); Johann Georg Forchhammer's "On the transition formation of Sweden", 'Annals of Philosophy', New Series, vol 6 (1823); Wilhelm Hisinger's list of fossils of transition beds published in Ami Boué's 'Mémoires géologiques et paléontologiques' (1832); Carl Vogt's 'Lehrbuch der Geologie und Petrefactenkunde' (1846-1847). The map is also annotated with geological periods and epoch of 'Devonian', 'Lower & Upper Silurian' and 'Miocene', the first term indicating a date of at least 1840. The paper of the lists on inside cover has a watermark of 1845.
Although not referenced, the map bears some similarities in its colouring to William Hisinger's map of the Sweden ['Geognostik karta ofver Medlersta och Sodra Delarne av Sverige' (1834)] of which Greenough owned two copies [see: LDGSL/947/6/H/3]. |
