DescriptionGeological colouring with key and notes by George Bellas Greenough, [?1809-1821] on base 'A New Map of the United States of America, from the latest authorities', published by John Cary, 1806. The colouring is taken from William Maclure's early map of the United States, published in the 'Journal de Physique', volume LXIX (1809). Greenough no.1845 [crossed out to read 583?] Scale-1:6,000,000, 52cm x 59cm. dissected on cloth in covers.
Administrative HistoryOther than William Maclure, Greenough's notes reference a number of bibliographic sources including: the work of Thomas Nuttall, possibly "Observations on the geological structure of the Valley of the Mississippi", Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, vol 2 (1821); articles from a French encyclopedia [?Encyclopédie méthodique]; Horace H Hayden's 'Geological essays; or, an inquiry into some of the geological phenomena to be found in various parts of America, and elsewhere' (1820); publications of Henry R Schoolcraft, including 'A View of the Lead Mines of Missouri' (1819) and 'A Narrative Journal of Travels Through the Northwestern Regions...to the Sources of the Mississippi River' (1821).
