| Administrative History | Although dated on the label as 1851, a large proportion of the bibliographic notes reference sources from c.1818-1832. However the map appears to have been worked on over a period of time and include references up to April 1851. The geological key uses broad Wernerian formations and is closer to William Maclure's geological map of the United States (first published in 1809), than James Hall's (1843).
Bibliographic references frequently cite articles in the journals of the Geological Society, Silliman's Journal, the Boston Journal of Philosophy and the Arts, Transactions of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec, Journal of the Royal Institution and Edinburgh Review.
The notes also cite other maps which are not held by the Geological Society, but are probably in the Greenough collection held by the Royal Geographical Society. |
