Administrative History | On his death, George Bellas Greenough bequeathed to the Society his geological library of books, maps and prints which were integrated into the Library's collections. The books now form part of the Library's rare book collection and the surviving prints and most of the annotated maps were added to Archive collection when it was formed in the early 1980s. The rest of the maps were held within the Map collection, but as many were annotated in some form or other, and Greenough viewed his map collection in its entirety, the maps have been brought back together again. There is no definitive listing of Greenough's maps, but most (with a number of exceptions) appear in the list of maps and charts in the 1860 Library printed catalogue alongside the other new accessions acquired during the period 1856-1859. Note: that from the 1930s there was a weeding of the collections due to storage issues and non-geological material was removed. A number of items appear to have been disposed of. |
