DescriptionEngraved topographical base map of the 'Ural Chain and the country to the west as far as Cazan', [1809-1820], with multiple pencil and ink notes in an unknown Russian hand, indicating the location of mines, after Benedikt Franz Johann von Hermann. In the legend, notes in Greenough's hand refer to a smaller version published in a Hermann work, possibly 'Versuch einer mineralogischen Beschreibung des Uralischen Erzgebirges' (1789) [?Mineralogical description of the ore of the Ural Mountains]. Sectioned on linen.
Administrative HistoryStrangways, through whom Greenough acquired the map, was a diplomat who was posted to St Petersburg between December 1816-June 1820.
