Administrative HistoryIn 1945, the Dr G M Lees and Mr P Evans, the directors of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company Ltd and the Burmah Oil Company Ltd respectively, offered the Society the sum of £750 per annum to provide the cost of an instructional tour for honours students in geology. The committee which was formed to advise Council on the matter, recommended that the first tour be held in 1946 and that the heads of the geological departments in universities and analogous institutions be asked to submit nominations for the appointment of the tour.

The original intention of the tours was to enable a selection of students from British universities to visit some of the major classic regions in British geology. The idea was to get an integrated picture of stratigraphical and structural relations and the influence of these on topography to develop a three-dimensional picture.
