Administrative HistoryAn External Relations Committee was originally set up in 1986 in order to promote the Society's standpoint nationally and internationally, concerning matters on which it was thought that the Society's views should be known. No minutes or papers are extant prior to 1991, and this may be because the committee met irregularly, reporting to Council as and when thought necessary.

In 1991 an External Affairs Committee was established, principally to determine policy. By 1999 its objectives included to foster a mutually beneficial working relationship between the Society and the media, as well as with national and international learned bodies. It also aimed to establish and maintain media and government monitoring, coordinate responses to government consultations, advise the Society on public relations, seek to influence public policy, foster the science and the profession's public image, and promote geoscience education.

It was known as the External Relations Board between May 1998 and May 2000, before being renamed the External Relations Committee.
