Administrative HistoryThe merging of the Geological Society and the Institution of Geologists, the professional body for geologists, in 1990 saw the awarding of the first 'Chartered Geologists' by the Society. In 1991, the Society was designated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as the competent authority for geology under the EEC Directive 89/48 in relation to the Single European Act concerning the mutual recognition of qualifications throughout the European Union.

All Chartered Geologists must have at least five years postgraduate experience and have undergone a procedure whereby their qualifications, training and experience have been validated by a board of experienced Chartered Geologists. Before 2009, if a candidate had sufficient practical experience there was the option to elect without interview. After this date, all candidates are now interviewed.
