Administrative HistoryJames Cowie Simpson, the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Watson Simpson, studied geology, metallurgy and mining at the Royal School of Mines between 1903-1906, before joining the Society in June 1906. From 1906-1910 he was a coal mining engineer in the United States, returning in 1911 to take up a position of engineer to E H Hunter & Co, London. In October 1916, Simpson joined the Royal Engineers (174th Tunnelling Coy) having already been a member of the Inns of Court OTC. He was killed in action on 6 December 1916.

Cemetery: Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
