Administrative HistoryThe Engineering Group is the largest of the Society's Specialist Groups. Since its formation in 1964 the Group has been the main focus for engineering geology in the UK. The Group is the UK National Group of the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). In the UK the Group maintains links with learned societies, professional bodies and the Society's Regional and other Specialist Groups.

The Engineering Group represents the Geological Society on The Ground Forum, the umbrella organisation for professional bodies and trade associations in ground engineering.

On behalf of the Society the Engineering Group is one of the supporting organisations for the UK Register of Ground Engineering Professionals, a competence based register that identifies ground engineering professionals from within the chartered membership of the Geological Society, the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

The Group's most prestigious annual event is the Glossop Meeting, which includes the Glossop Lecture presented by a leader in the field, from the UK or overseas. The Engineering Group Award is presented in early to mid career to mark a significant contribution to research, publication or practice in the field of Engineering Geology. Every two years the Group hosts the Engineering Group Forum, which provides an opportunity for the members to meet and discuss a topical theme.
