DescriptionCorrespondence, handwritten notes, articles, diagrams, and a map relating to the discovery of oil while boring for coal at Kelham, Nottinghamshire in August 1911. James Ford was superintending the project, and was part of a syndicate made up of himself, M Deacon and CR Hewitt. After discovering the oil, the men tried to persuade people to invest, and wrote to the authorities on the eve of the First World War to highlight how valuable it would be to have English oil resources. However, the scheme does not seem to have attracted investment.
