Administrative HistoryUniversity College of North Staffordshire was founded in 1949 and was the brainchild of Lord Lindsay, Master of Balliol College, Oxford. Known as the 'Keele Experiment', its rational was providing a more broad-based university education. The degree course was of 4 years duration and designed to widen a student’s perspective of the western world. Year 1 was the ‘Foundation Year’ and there was a common course of lectures (2 a day) mainly given by all the Professors in turn. These were backed up by weekly tutorials. In parallel, students had to follow 2 three term courses in subjects new to their experience. Worsely could not select geology as he had studied it at A Level. Instead he took American history and Chemistry. In addition, each term a student took a different course usually on subjects taken at ‘A’ level.

In Years 2-4, students took two 'Principal' subjects of equal standing (P1, P2 & P3), Worsley choosing Geology and Geography. In year 2 and year 3 a year-long subsidiary subject was required, Worsely elected to take Chemistry and Economics. All students graduated as BA.

In 1962 UCNS became Keele University.

The student notes are of interest as they were taken during a period when the beginnings of what would become plate tectonics were gradually filtering into the teaching of students.
