DescriptionBlack and white, glass lantern slides of geological subjects, used for teaching purposes, 1897-[1950s]. A proportion of the images show Pleistocene and Eocene geology in the Dartford area, notably through photographs of railway cuttings and quarries. Most of the slides have no captions or author.

Within the collection are slides from a by number of publishers - Flatters and Garnett of Manchester; E G Wood; Tyler; The Diagram Company - who issued special geological series of slides.
ProvenanceThe slides came from the library of the late John Carreck of Queen Mary College, London. Some of them may also have come from Dartford Library where he worked or was associated for some time. A small number of the slides are marked as originating from the Geology & Geography Department, University College Nottingham or 'East London College'. Donated by Stuart Baldwin, December 2012.

A second accession of lantern slides, mainly of a palaeontological nature, were given by Stuart Baldwin in March 2013.
AppraisalAround 75 of the slides are purely diagrammatical, taken from publications. For copyright reasons they may be disposed of.
