DescriptionGeneral correspondence of Dan McKenzie, Professor of Earth Sciences in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, England, January-December 1993. The contents principally comprise various invitations and arrangements for McKenzie to attend symposia, serve on committees, give talks or write articles, requests for preprints or computer programs, or permission to republish his papers, correspondence with publishers, or with fellow academics/scientists seeking McKenzie's opinion on their works, but also:

JANUARY 1993
Fuat Saroglu, MTA Enerji Dairesi, Ankara, Turkey, sends his 'Active Fault Map of Turkey' and asks McKenzie for any suggestions to improve it, 4 January 1993, with copy reply from McKenzie complimenting Saroglu on the work and making only one small suggestion that he should continue to show the faults under water, 12 January 1993; John Sclater, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA, family issues [CLOSED], has learnt a new computer system pioneered by Tony Watts which will allow him to process data, budget cuts at Scripps, rumours about finding a successor to Freeman Gilbert and asks for McKenzie's views, 21 January 1993, encloses a letter from Sclater to Robert 'Bob' White, Bullard Laboratories, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, England, is currently processing the gravity data from a salt dome off the Texas Gulf coast so cannot devote much time to the Cayman seismology proposal but suggests colleagues at the Institute of Geophysics, Texas University (UTIG) who are willing to participate, 21 January 1993; letters between McKenzie and Mark Moody-Stuart, [Shell] concerning McKenzie's complaint that the 'aggressive' interview techniques of the company are putting off very good candidates, 13-30 January 1993;

FEBRUARY 1993
Two letters from Rodney Harris, Head of Geography, Westminster School, London, England, [McKenzie's old school] thanking McKenzie for sending him offprints on plate tectonics, 20 January & 12 Feburary 1993; Jean-Claude Sibuet, Département Géosciences Marines, Ifremer Centre de Brest, Plouzane, France, as McKenzie was the first person to write on triple junctions, sends a copy of his paper with Shiri Srivastava "R R R trip junction evolution in continental lithosphere" [included] for comments, 22 February 1993, with copy reply from McKenzie stating that he remains unconvinced that you can apply plate tectonics concepts to continental deformation, but points out that Sibuet has noticed that extension is largest where three plates meet which is very important, 24 February 1993; Dr Robin E Sowden, Science Officer, British Council, Tokyo, Japan, would like to know if McKenzie or his research colleagues will be visiting Japan in the next year, 12 January 1993, with copy reply from McKenzie detailing the research interests of his Bullard Laboratories colleagues but whilst he is encouraging them to take an interest in island arcs of Japan he has made little progress, 16 February 1993, with letter of acknowledgement from Sowden, 26 February 1993;

MARCH 1993
Barry Scott, Department of Geology, University of Leicester, England, his Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) research grant application to investigate strain rates in western Turkey was turned down and he believes that McKenzie was one of the referees, thinks there may have been a problem concerning the inclusion of Nicky White and explains how the project developed to involve Dr Maxwell Meju who specialises in inverse modelling, 22 March 1993, with copy reply from McKenzie denying that he was involved in the refereeing process and does not know who was, is pleased that inverse theory methods which have been practiced at Bullard for decades are slowly spreading, points out that anyone proposing to use inverse theory to look at extension in western Turkey would need to work with John Haines, although he has not seen Scott's proposals but if it concerns subsidence history then the original referees' remarks may have been justified, 29 March 1993; letter from McKenzie to Dietmar Muller, [no address], forwarding copies of three plots demonstrating melting from a MORB source for Sao Miguel, faxed 29 March 1993;

APRIL 1993
Laura Reiser [Wetzel], is working on applying McKenzie's model of distributed deformation and slip vectors to propagating rift deformation zones, is also looking at McKenzie's geometry of propagating rifts paper, is beginning to consider the shape of the deformation zone and wonders if McKenzie has any thoughts on the subject, 14 April 1993; Magellan Investigator list, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), 16 April 1993; agreement from Schlumberger Technology Corporation for McKenzie's consultancy services, 21 April 1993;

MAY 1993
Professor James 'Jim' Briden, Director, Earth Sciences, NERC, Swindon, England, is reviewing the NERC strategy on Earth sciences and wants to know McKenzie's views on the decline of field based research, 26 April 1993, with brief copy reply from McKenzie unable to offer anything useful as he has not been involved in NERC's grant committees for 12 years, 10 May 1993; Robert 'Bob' White, Bullard Laboratories, University of Cambridge, Shell scholarships for students, frustrated by the changes in the way that the NERC will fund future marine geophysics projects, 20 May 1993;

JUNE 1993
Draft and copy letters to Vincent Salters, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, New York, USA, and Stan Hart, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts, USA, reminding them that they were to find a data set to resolve a computer calculation problem, 1 June 1993; Peter Warren, Executive Secretary, Royal Society, London, England, inviting McKenzie to serve as a member of Sectional Committee 5, 27 May 1993, with draft copy reply from McKenzie agreeing but only if the committee's decision is not overruled by Council as happened previously which almost led him to resign, 6 June 1993; copyright agreement with 'Scientific American' for the paper "Volcanism at Rifts" [White, R & McKenzie, D, "Volcanism and rifting", 'Scientific American', vol 261 (July 1989), pp62-71], 11 June 1993; brief letters between McKenzie and Professors Klaus Schmidt & H Schminke, Deutsche Vulkanologische Gesellschaft, Mendig, Germany, and Klaus Regenauer-Lieb thanking each other for the student trip to the Laacher Sea area in Mendig, 19 April-14 June 1993, includes newspaper cutting from 'Rhein-Zeitung' which includes a photograph and short report of the trip [in German], 16 April 1993;

JULY 1993
Copies of faxes and emails, mainly between Robert 'Bob' White, Bullard Laboratories, University of Cambridge, and members of the Nordic Volcanological Institute, University of Iceland, Reykjavik, Iceland concerning arrangements for a seismic study project in north-east Iceland, 29 March-7 July 1993;

AUGUST 1993
Dietmar Müller, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, California, USA, has finally sat the viva voce for his PhD thesis and was simultaneously offered a job at the University of Sydney, Australia, is pleased with the facilities at the new post especially in view of his recent National Science Foundation (NSF) grant proposal being rejected, 19 August 1993;

SEPTEMBER 1993
Raymond 'Spike' Hide, c/o NERC Oceanography Unit, Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics, Oxford, England, as he is working on the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project of the World Climate Research Programme he will be postponing his application to the Leverhulme Trust for an emeritus fellowship, 10 September 1993;

OCTOBER 1993
Daniel Mege, Laboratoire de Geologie Dynamique Interne, Universite de Paris-Sud, Orsday-Cédex, France, is trying to work out the tectonics of the Valles Marineris canyons of the planet Mars, 19 October 1993;

NOVEMBER 1993
Sir Michael Atiyah, President, Royal Society, London, England, requesting McKenzie's comments on the Higher Education Funding Council England (HEFCE) Research Assessment consultation document (June 1993), 20 October 1993, with copy reply from McKenzie to Peter Collins, Royal Society, taking issue with two of the points, 1 November 1993.
Administrative HistoryMcKenzie was granted a sabbatical during the Easter term, April-June, to spend at the Ecole Normal Surperieure in Paris.
