DescriptionGeneral correspondence of Dan McKenzie, Professor of Earth Sciences in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, England, January-December 1996. The contents principally comprise various invitations and arrangements for McKenzie to attend symposia, serve on committees, give talks or write articles, requests for preprints or computer programs, or permission to republish his papers, correspondence with publishers, or with fellow academics/scientists seeking McKenzie's opinion on their works, but also:

Christopher 'Chris' Hawkesworth, Department of Earth Sciences, Open University, Milton Keynes, England, is part of the Natural Environment Research Council's (NERC) review group evaluating the UK contribution to the Ocean Drilling Programme (ODP), would like McKenzie's views on the matter, 3 January 1996, with copy reply from McKenzie stating that the only spectacular success of the program was to obtain continuous sediment records for climate research, notably for the work of Nicholas Shackleton, but his own attempts to use the data in relation to the origin of the oceanic crust and MORB has been disappointing due to the poor geochemical analyses of samples, ODP may have something to contribute to the mapping of the sedimentary record of oceans and although important it would be expensive and dull, thinks the continued involvement in the program should depend on Shackleton's opinion, 8 January 1996; copy letter to Celal Sengor, I T U Maden Fakultesi, Jeoloji, Istanbul, Turkey, providing comments on Sengor's obituary of Ihsan Ketin (included), 11 January 1996;

Emails and faxes between James Jackson, Bullard Laboratories, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, England, and McKenzie, concerning the offer to Jackson of a temporary lecturing post at Gresham College, 2-23 February 1996;

Erdogan S Suhubi, Editor-in-Chief, ARI, Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, describing the structural changes to the 'Bulletin of the Technical University of Istanbul' and inviting McKenzie to become one of its editors, 4 March 1996, with copy reply from McKenzie honoured to be asked but declines as he thinks that general journals published by a single institution or country are not where good scientists submit papers, citing the 'Philosophical Transactions' and 'Proceedings' of the Royal Society as two journals which are in trouble in this respect, states that he currently prefers to publish in the 'Journal of Geophysical Research' which is American but when he submits papers to the 'Geophysical Journal' he deals with the American or Australian editors as he does not trust the British ones, 12 March 1996; printed email from John Haines, about the rumours circulating around his institution in New Zealand concerning his' possible appointment at Cambridge, 27 March 1996, with printed email reply from McKenzie annoyed that the University of Cambridge is making a mess of McKenzie's appointment as a Royal Society Research Professor [see: LDGSL/1107/A/1/35, 23 November], but he still wishes to appoint Haines to replace his post, 29 March 1996;

Letters from Richard A Sibson and Robin A J Smith, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, concerning a review of the Geology Department of the university, and seeking McKenzie's opinion, 17 & 26 April 1996, with brief replies from McKenzie, 25 April 1996; Rick Brassington, Southern Science Ltd, Crawley, West Sussex, England, representing the Geological Society of London, proposes the formation of a Professional Practice Specialist Group which would help accelerate growth of the Society's chartership grade of membership, 11 April 1996;

Alfred Kröner, Institut fur Geowissenschaften, Johannes Gutenberg - Universität Mainz, Germany, announcing the launch of the new European geological journal 'Terra Nova', 2 May 1996; Albrecht Hofmann, Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie, Mainz, Germany, agrees with McKenzie's critical views on previous joint initiatives between the European Union of Geosciences (EUG) and the European Geophysical Society (EGS), 6 May 1996;

Printed emails from McKenzie and John Maclennan, Earth Sciences Department, University of Cambridge, to Karl Gronvold concerning arrangements (or lack of) for the planned field trip to Iceland, 9 July 1996; correspondence between Vincet Courtillot, Laboratoire de Geomagnetisme et Paleomagnetisme, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, France, and McKenzie, concerning the latter's agreement to act as chairman of the Wegener Medal Committee for the EUG, 15 May 1995-9 July 1996;

David W Lynn, Policy and Communications Division, NERC, Swindon, England, NERC is working on a portfolio planning exercise into measuring scientific excellence, seeking McKenzie's opinion on the ten most influential scientists working in the world today and the strengths and weaknesses of Earth sciences in the UK, 2 October 1996, with copy reply from McKenzie excluding himself from the list but providing 13 names, 11 October 1996;

Copy letters from McKenzie to Kurt Lambeck, Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, and Norman Sleep, Department of Geophysics, Stanford University, California, USA, congratulating them on being awarded the Wegener Medal of the EGU, 26 November 1996.
