DescriptionWorking files principally relating to the papers: McKenzie, D, "The generation and compaction of partially molten rock", 'Journal of Petrology', vol 25 (1984), pp713-765 & McKenzie, D, "The extraction of magma from the crust and mantle", 'Earth and Planetary Science Letters', vol 74 (1985), pp81-91. File 2 also references McKenzie, D, "A possible mechanism for epeirogenic uplift", 'Nature', vol 307 (1984), pp616-618 and McKenzie, D, "230Th-238U disequilibrium and the melting processes beneath ridge axes", 'Earth and Planetary Science Letters', vol 72 (1985), pp149-157.

File 1 entitled '(1) Partial Melting Chicago 1983', principally comprising of manuscript notes, equations*, plots, bibliographic references, draft figures* and copies of extracts from relevant, published academic papers by others, printed programmes and abstract booklets for Royal Society Discussion meetings and computer generated datasets, 1977, 1981-1983, relating to the paper "The generation and compaction of partially molten rock" [ibid]. The file also includes some correspondence from McKenzie or his academic/geological peers, notably draft letter to Keith [?Cox, Department of Geology & Mineralogy, University of Oxford, England], asking if he would check the petrology side of the paper for him*, and Sven Maaloe, Professor of Petrology, Department of Geology, University of Bergen, Norway, on the permeability calculations used in Maaloe's recent paper ["The permeability controlled accumulation of primary magma", 'Contributions to Mineral Petrology', vol 81 (1982), pp350-357], 20 July-5 August 1983. [in two folders].

File 2 entitled 'Melting and Compaction 2', principally comprising correspondence with fellow academics and includes: letters from Keith Cox, Department of Geology & Mineralogy, University of Oxford, England, and editor of 'Earth and Planetary Science Letters' concering the contents and editing process of McKenzie's paper "The extraction of magma from the crust and mantle" [ibid], with referee reports, November 1983-February 1985; correspondence between McKenzie and Neil Ribe, Assistant Professor of Geology and Geophysics, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Yale University, New Haven Connecticut, USA, regarding McKenzie's refereeing of Ribe's unpublished paper "Dynamical equations for magma segregation", including referee reports, December 1984-February 1985; typescript programme with brief abstracts of the Geological Society joint meeting with the Joint Association for Geophysics, the Metamorphic Studies Group and the Third Alfred Wegener Conference, 'Nature of the Lower Continental Crust', 24-26 October 1984, taken from the 'Newsletter of the Geological Society', vol 13 (September 1984); manuscript notes, equations and bibliographic references; computer generated and manuscript plots and graphs; letter from Dr Henry Dick, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and replies from McKenzie, comparing their respective research, June-October 1984; computer generated data sets, July 1984; correspondence between Keith Cox, editor of 'Earth and Planetary Science Letters', and McKenzie concerning the refereeing of McKenzie's paper "230Th-238U disequilibrium and the melting processes beneath ridge axes" [ibid], July-October 1984; letters between McKenzie and Jamie Connolly, Department of Geosciences, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, USA, on numerical modelling computer programmes in order to understand the variant composition produced by the compaction of a partially molten rock (VERTEX), June 1984; Euan Nisbet, Department of Geological Sciences, University of Saskatchewan, Canada, giving detailed comments on McKenzie's paper, 12 June [1984]; letter from David Loper, Professor of Mathematics & Institute Associate, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, Florida State University, Talahassee, Florida, USA, asking McKenzie's opinion on a proposed conference on the 'Structure and dynamics of partially solidified material', April-May 1984; typescript programme of the Penrose Conference on Processes and Products of Multistage Melting and Metasomatism in the Mantle', organised by the Geological Society of America and held at Gold Canyon Ranch, Apache Junction, Arizona, 30 April-4 May 1984, with brief manuscript annotations by McKenzie [presumably notes taken at the conference] and delegate list; letters concerning the refereeing and editing process of McKenzie's paper, "The generation and compaction of partially molten rock" [ibid], including referee reports, January-June 1984, and letters from McKenzie's academic peers commenting on the paper, September-December 1983, notably Dr Dave Walker, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University, suggesting that McKenzie's paper would be improved by a more generous acknowledgement of the previous work on the subject [undertaken by Walker], 26 September 1983, with copy reply from McKenzie, 4 October 1983; manuscript drafts of appendices, [1983-1984]; letters from various editors of 'Nature' about McKenzie's paper "A possible mechanism for epeirogenic lift" [ibid], October 1983, includes copies of comments from two referees, July 1983; cutting of article "Snowflakes are far from simple" by John Maddox, taken from 'Nature' vol 306 (1983), p413; grant application to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) for McKenzie's project "Creep and Compaction in partial melts and sediments", November [1983], with referee comments by Herbert Huppert supporting the application, 12 January 1984; photocopies of published academic papers on related subjects, 1977-1983; programme for the Open University symposium 'Understanding the Earth, 1983', held in Milton Keynes, England, 5-6 October 1983, with brief annotations by McKenzie.

Administrative HistoryPart of the work was conducted whilst McKenzie was on sabbatical leave at the Department of Geophysical Sciences, University of Chicago, USA, between March-August/September 1983.

Note: contains the 'McKenzie Equations' which have since become fundamental to the study of igneous petrology. [Information from McKenzie, October 2016.]
