File 1 also includes material relating to: McKenzie, D and B Parsons & M Talwani, "Gravity, topography and thermal convection inside the Earth", 'V-Gram' [JPL newsletter about Venus], February pp5-14.

File 1 (split into two folders), entitled 'Venus 8/89-9/91 letters etc', principally comprising: Magellan mission status reports, October 1989-May 1991; announcements, invitations to and programmes of workshops, conferences and meetings for the official Magellan investigator and working groups, notably the Radar Investigation Group (RADIG), 1989-1990; data sets and plots, 1990-1991; manuscript notes and calculations, 1990-[1991]; copies of published academic papers by others on the geology and teconics of Venus mostly using data from the Magellan space probe, 1989-1990; typescript list of approved and proposed names for craters of Venus, 6 April 1991; photocopy of a notebook, dated 31 January 1991, belonging to McKenzie, marked 'JPL' [Jet Propulsion Laboratory], containing brief notes on computer passwords & logarithms, to do list, comments about individuals or their contact details, Venus plots; correspondence with fellow geologists/scientists generally on the subject of McKenzie's research, sharing data, or seeking McKenzie's opinion on their respective papers, June-December 1990; photographic images of the radar topography of a crater of Venus cut by a normal fault, August 1989*; Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) research grant application for McKenzie's proposed project "Structural geology, geochemistry and internal evolution of Venus", March 1990; copies of two academic papers by Roger Searle and Neil Mitchell, on the GLORIA image processing system, 1989-1990; colour photograph of McKenzie, Craig Leff, Susan Yewell and Pam Jansma at Walnut Canyon National Monument, Arizona, USA, 16 June 1989; typescript drafts of paper, McKenzie, D & B Parsons, and M Talwani, "Gravity, topography and thermal convection inside the Earth" [ibid], with letters from Carolynn Young, JPL, and Barry Parsons concerning its editing and publication, October-December 1989.

File 2, entitled 'Venus (1) S10, Oct 91 & earlier', notably comprising: correspondence with Professor Clark Chapman, editor of the 'Journal of Geophysical Research (Planets)', and McKenzie's fellow authors, concerning the editing and refereeing process for the papers "Features on Venus generated by plate boundary processes", "Pancake-like domes on Venus" and "Dyke emplacement on Venus and on the Earth", including typescript drafts and referee reports, May 1991-June 1992; correspondence with fellow geologists/scientists generally on the subject of McKenzie's research, sharing data, or seeking McKenzie's opinion on their respective work, June 1991-March 1994; data sets, plots, satellite charts and status reports relating to the activities of the Magellan space craft, 1991-1992; manuscript notes, equations, calcualtions and bibliographic references, 1991-1992; NERC research grant application for McKenzie's project "Geological processes within Venus", November 1991; copies of published academic papers by others on related subjects, 1936-1990; correspondence with Gordon Pettengill, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, regarding co-authorship acknowledgements, January 1992; letters from Magellan investigators emphasising the usefulness of the Magellan spacecraft, and the plans for the mapping cycle, 3 October 1991; Venus impact crater inventory and dyeline map by Gerald G Schaber, Impact Cratering Processes Subgroup, US Geological Survey, January-July 1991*.
Administrative HistoryThe Magellan spacecraft was launched by the NASA space shuttle ATLANTIS on 4 May 1989, with a mission to map the surface of the planet using radar and measure the planet's gravitational field. The probe reached Venus in August 1990, the mission effectively ending in October 1994 when radio contact was lost.

All three papers in this series were published as part of the special Magellan issue of the 'Journal of Geophysical Research (Planets)', vol 97 (1992).

McKenzie was a member of the Magellan Radar Investigation Group (RADIG), one of the four official Magellan investigator groups.
