DescriptionLetter from William Henry FITTON, Paris, to George Bellas Greenough, 27 Nov 1822. Re: Is having limited success attempting to exchange copies of Greenough's Geological Map of England & Wales with the French publishers Goujon and Picquet as there will be a limited market for such a map in France [in evidence is enclosed a letter from the former]; will be resident in Paris until April the following year if the Map Committee would like to purchase the maps on their wish list; pleased that Lyell has become Secretary; has only seen one copy of the new series of the Transactions, compliments Webster's colouring of the plates and Buckland's deserved award of the [Copley] Medal; activities of Prevost and D'Halloy; possible translation of Conybeare's 'Outlines'.
Administrative HistoryThe 'Map Committee' was the Committee for the Purchase of Maps, which was established to inquire whether the leading publishers of maps on the continent would be willing to supply the Society in exchange for a number of copies of Greenough's ‘Geological Map of England & Wales' (1820).
