DescriptionManuscript and printed tracts on altitudes and canal levels which have been bound together, comprising:

1) PANSNER, Lorenz von, 'Höhen der Örter über der Meeresfläche im eüropäischen und asiatischen Russland, aus Barometer-Beobachtungen, die während der Reise mit der Russischen Gesandtschaft nach China in den Jahren 1805-1807, so wie auf einigen spätern Reisen im Russischen Reiche angestellt wurden'. Berlin: Gedruckt bei G. Reimer, 1837.

2) ENGLEFIELD, Henry Charles, 'The most expeditious method of determining altitudes of every denomination, with the new portable mountain barometer; together with a description of the instrument, examples of its use, and prepared pages for registering the observations. To which is added a short description and use of Thomas Jones's patent sectograph'. London: Thomas Jones, 1811.

3) 'Höhen Salzburgischer und anderer benachbarten Berge, Alpen, Ortschaften, Flüsse und Seen', [n.d.]. Mss vertical chart marking the heights of Salzburg and other neighbouring mountains, Alps, towns, rivers and lakes.

4) Manuscript 'Tables of changes of level in the Baltic [Table of the elevation of land in Sweden]', by Ch F Lufin, Berlin 1837. Also letter from Francis Walker describing the context of the item which he copied whilst in Alten, Finmark, 10 March 1837.

5) Manuscript list 'Levels of canals in the South of England', by unknown author, [wmk 1830]. At the back are two very rough, sketch pencil diagrams.

6) 'An alphabetical list of the altitudes of the stations, and several other remarkable hills, computed from the observations made in the course of the Trigonometrical Survey'. London: Printed by William Bulmer and Co, 1811.
CustodialHistoryBound as a Tract volume, however its tract reference is missing. The Museum ref is taken from a location marked on one of the documents. Transferred from Library 1 February 2018.
ProvenanceThe Francis Walker table is marked that it was received on 3 March 1837.
