Administrative HistoryThe Thames Archway, a tunnel intended to connect Rotherhithe and Limehouse, was proposed by Robert Vazie in 1802 with work starting in 1805 overseen by the Thames Archway Company. Work was abandoned in 1808 (Vazie was fired in 1807 and replaced by Richard Trevithick) due to lack of funds and the unstable geological strata of the tunnelling site.
CustodialHistoryPreviously miscatalogued as the plan for the Gravesend to Tilbury Fort Tunnel, which was the first attempt at constructing a Thames Tunnel, proposed by Ralph Dodd in 1799, but abandoned in 1802 due to water ingress.
ProvenancePresented to the Society by George Bellas Greenough, 2 June 1809.
