DescriptionGeological notes and colouring by William Buckland, [1813-1820], on base map 'Topographical map of the County of Somerset reduced by the large survey in nine sheets by W Day and C H Masters', published by W Eaden, 1 January 1803. Includes at least one pencil note by George Bellas Greenough. On the canvas backing are thumbnail sketches of rough sections and topography [?] with a list of names and addresses of individuals, presumably from the area, including Robert Anstice and J S Miller [Muller]. Dissected on cloth, 2 miles to 1 inch.
Administrative HistoryThe note by George Bellas Greenough possibly indicates that the compilation of this map is connected to the research for George Bellas Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales' (1820)
ProvenanceOriginally presented to the Society by Prof J Morris, 1883, however in a letter from Thomas Sheppard, 5 May 1943 (CM/9/5, 23 June 1943), he states that it was subsequently disposed of by the Society as a duplicate when it was then acquired by Prof P F Kendall of Leeds University. Sheppard purchased Kendall's collection and offered it again to the Society as he was in financial difficulty.
