DescriptionExtensive geological colouring, with ink and pencil notes, by George Bellas Greenough, [1810-?1847] on base 'Map exhibiting the great post roads, physical and political divisions of Europe', by Aaron Arrowsmith, 1810. Greenough no.11. No key, but the geological colouring is quite broad and simple, with rough lines indicating the extent of the chalk. Scale-1:250,000. Dissected on cloth.
Administrative HistoryThe majority of the references cited date from before 1817, including: Sir George Stewart Mackenzie's 'Travels in the island of Iceland, during the summer of the year MDCCCX' (1811), during which he was accompanied by Henry Holland and Richard Bright; the surveys of Captain Francis Beaufort, RN ; Encyclopedia Britannica [nd]; 'Neptune Francais', ?1693 [atlas of sea charts owned by Greenough, now held by RGS]; 'Seatorch', which may be J T Serres' 'The Little Sea-Torch or True Guide for Coasting Pilots, along the Coasts of England, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Sicily, &c' (1801) [another Greenough volume, also held by the RGS]; information from William Thomas Horner Fox Strangways, February 1817.

There is one reference, written in pencil which seems to cite Carl Vogt's 'Lehrbuch der Geologie und Petrefactenkunde...' (1846-1847) which may indicate that the map was reworked at a later date.
CustodialHistoryThomas Sheppard gives this map a date of 1835, possibly connected to the apparent lack of Roderick Murchison's & Adam Sedgwick's Silurian and Cambrian systems respectively.
