DescriptionOne complete set and three loose sheets of the third edition of George Bellas GREENOUGH's 'Geological Map of England and Wales', first issued 1865, comprising:

Draft
1) Pencil draft of the revised legend with dedication to William Smith, attached to which is the notice of Council for the agreed wording, initialled 'WWS', dated December 1864. [Warington Wilkinson Smyth, Secretary (1856-1866)]. No watermark.

Complete set
2) TS 4. 6 sheets, sectioned and mounted on linen. Each sheet measures 66.6cm x c.83cm

Loose sheets
3) Single coloured sheet, NW (Scotland) of the third edition. Watermark 1869. [sooty]
4) Single coloured sheet, SE of England of third edition. Watermark 1870. The colouring is very bright, and apart from some superficial dirt round the edges is in pristine condition.

Administrative HistoryThe map continued to be produced in batches to order, hence later watermarks of the paper.
ProvenanceItems 1 & 3 were found tightly rolled in the Y Stack in August 2016, the latter likely to be an oddment left over from when the Society sold the maps onsite. Item 4 was transferred from the Map collection in July 2014. Item 2 is from the Map collection but removed to archives for security & preservation storage purposes in August 2016
